Typography
As one of three graphic design students selected to represent Wichita State University’s graphic design department at the 2024 Emerging Artists Exhibition, I created a series of vinyl record covers inspired by pivotal moments in my life. Expanding upon an existing design project, I focused heavily on expressive typography to capture the emotions and messages conveyed by the music while reflecting my personal growth.
The series includes redesigns of Tame Impala’s latest album, My Chemical Romance’s "The Black Parade," and the hymn 'I’ll Fly Away.' Each piece explores a different aspect of my journey—embracing change, finding self-identity, and cherishing tradition and memory. The continuous color scheme ties the series together, representing the transformative impact of music on my life.
A deeply personal design, I'll Fly Away reflects my journey of navigating faith, frustration, and self-discovery.
The "Black Parade" design captures my preteen struggle with self-identity and grief, inspired by My Chemical Romance’s exploration of loss and internal battles.
The Tame Impala design reflects my journey of embracing change and adaptability, inspired by Kevin Parker’s evolving artistry and my growth at Wichita State.
Each album cover was aligned with personal experiences and themes from the music, using expressive typography as the central design element.
Visual and thematic motifs of the albums, such as stained glass for I’ll Fly Away and VHS overlays for The Black Parade, informed the designs.
I crafted each cover with unique elements—abstract sand textures for Tame Impala, divided compositions for The Black Parade, and cohesive color schemes across all designs to unify the trilogy.
